Rahul

Rahul, 23, joined our Teens and Toddlers programme when he was 14. Supporting his mentee to make friends and grow in confidence taught Rahul a lot about himself. The experience transformed his school life and empowered him to take on new challenges.

Even though my mentee was only five years old, I learned so much about myself from him.

“In school, there were two sides of me. I was either quiet and kept to myself, or I’d get angry and end up in fights. I was referred to the programme to help manage my behaviour but I was also curious and genuinely wanted to see what it was all about.

When I first met my mentee, he didn’t like interacting with people and would play by himself a lot. I played with him to try and find out his interests, and before long, he was running up to me as soon as I walked into the nursery, full of energy and excitement.

One of the biggest changes I saw in my mentee was preparing him for the school play. He was terrified but with encouragement, I helped him build the confidence to take part. From here, he started playing with the other children and made loads of friends.

That experience inspired me too. The following year, I decided to take part in my own school play. I was also nervous but knowing my mentee had found the courage to try made me think, why not do the same?

It was the first time I had performed in front of so many people, and I really enjoyed it. I wouldn’t have done it without Teens and Toddlers. Even though my mentee was only five years old, I learned so much about myself from him.

Through Teens and Toddlers, I gained anger management skills that helped me control my emotions. And at school, my behaviour improved. I got into less fights and arguments, participated more in lessons, and I even started talking to people I didn’t know very well.

After the programme, Power2 offered me further opportunities. I was invited – along with other young people – to be on the panel interviewing candidates for the CEO role at Power2. It was an amazing experience because it showed that our voices were valued.

I’ve also delivered speeches at Power2’s dragon boat race fundraiser, Power2 Paddle, so I’ve built up my confidence in public speaking too.”

Overall, I’ve discovered that stepping outside of your comfort zone is part of growth. Without these experiences, I wouldn’t be where I am today.
