Teens and Toddlers

The programme boosts young people’s wellbeing, reignites their passion for learning and helps them succeed in school and life, all through the experience of mentoring nursery children.

About Teens and Toddlers

This is an award-winning 16-week programme for students in Years 7-12 who are struggling with their mental wellbeing and school engagement.

The programme provides a tailored experience for young people to step away from their day-to-day routines and mentor younger children in a nursery setting. In doing so, they form meaningful friendships with the children while actively supporting their learning and development.

Successful completion of the programme means young people achieve a nationally recognised NCFE Level 1 qualification in Interpersonal Skills.

Programme topics include

Developing effective coping strategies

Goal setting and future planning

Self-esteem and resilience

Effective communication

Where to go for support

Who we work with

We support young people facing challenges at pivotal moments in their lives, helping them take positive steps forward. They may need our support for a variety of reasons:

  • Poor wellbeing
  • Low self-esteem
  • High absence levels
  • Disengaged from school and learning
  • At risk of exclusion
  • Involved in risky behaviour

It feels amazing to be a role model. It makes me feel more mature and more confident about myself. It’s changed me a lot.

One young person who has benefited from Teens and Toddlers is Leon, aged 14. Before the programme, Leon found expressing himself difficult which would sometimes present itself as acting out in class. Becoming a role model in a supportive environment with other young people also facing challenges has helped Leon to grow in confidence.

I remember thinking, ‘if these children can see something special in me, why can’t I see that in myself?’ It was a realisation that shaped who I am today.

I’ve discovered that stepping outside of your comfort zone is part of growth. Without these experiences, I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I started to notice Alex waiting at the door for me, and he would light up when he saw me, grab my hand and take me with him to play.

At the start of the programme, one of our young people didn't know how to talk to the children but since then she built up her conversational skills. She is now very comfortable around people and is proud of how far she’s come.
