Aleesha

Aleesha, 18, joined our Teens and Toddlers programme seven years ago. Through mentoring, she began to believe in herself and gained the confidence to pursue a career working with children.

Although I always had an interest in working with children, being able to experience my passion on Teens and Toddlers was amazing.

“Before the programme, I struggled with low confidence and self-esteem. In school, I didn’t think I had the knowledge to do my work and often felt my work wasn’t good enough. Because of this, I found it hard to speak up in lessons when I needed support.

My teachers referred me to the programme to help build my confidence and encourage me to step outside my comfort zone.

When interacting with the toddlers, I focused a lot on positive reassurance. I encouraged them through activities, gave clear instructions and praised them when they tried something new. Seeing the children understand and respond because of my support made me feel more confident in myself.

Alongside this, the classroom sessions taught me important interpersonal skills which I put into practice when speaking to the toddlers, my peers and the Power2 staff. It helped me to become more comfortable voicing my opinions and expressing how I feel.

After completing the programme, my confidence in school improved significantly too. I began asking questions in lessons which made learning feel less overwhelming and much easier.

I also no longer felt awkward talking to people. Even in interviews, I found it much easier to communicate and became more outgoing than I used to be.

Since finishing education, I’ve applied for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) jobs as I hope to work in either a SEND nursery or a SEND school.

Although I always had an interest in working with children, being able to experience my passion on Teens and Toddlers was amazing.”

The programme showed me that I did have the knowledge and capability to take initiative in my life. It taught me valuable skills, and I’ve had a lot of fun!
