Jerriah

When Jerriah, 16, was referred to our one-to-one programme, Power2 Rediscover, she was struggling to communicate effectively with the people in her life. Frequent arguments with teachers and peers led to a series of exclusions from school.

I think my teachers have seen a change in me. I have learnt the importance of talking to someone.

Power2 Rediscover helps young people build a trusted relationship with an adult who listens, provides encouragement and helps them grow. For many, it’s the first time they’ve truly felt valued and seen.

Jerriah said, I think I was invited [on the programme] because of continuous incidents that caused me to miss school. I found relationships with teachers difficult. I didn’t have the motivation to work at school.”

To support Jerriah, one of our Programme Leads, Sophie, began working closely with her to strengthen her communication skills and Jerriah learnt ways to express her thoughts and emotions clearly

As she progressed and her behaviour improved, Jerriah opened up to Sophie about her frustration at being labelled as a ‘misbehaving student, by others despite her efforts to change.

“I learnt the difference between passive, aggressive and assertive communication and this has helped me understand how to communicate effectively whilst maintaining relationships with others.

“She was disappointed that people weren’t seeing her progress yet. I encouraged her to stay consistent and to focus on changing for herself, and that in time, others would see it too,” said Sophie.

Jerriah stayed motivated, and it wasn’t long before her school noticed her transformation. She no longer had suspensions, her relationships with teachers improved and she approached learning with a positive mindset.

Power2 Rediscover gave Jerriah the tools she needed to manage her emotions and improve her communication skills. By the end of the programme, Jerriah was focused on finishing the school year and preparing for her exams.

She said, “I kinda enjoy school now. There is less drama, and my grades are improving because I learnt not to get into disagreements. I think my teachers have seen a change in me. I have learnt the importance of talking to someone.”

Jerriah’s hard work at school paid offshe applied to two sixth forms and received offers from both. We’re incredibly proud of Jerriah and everything she’s achieved

I kinda enjoy school now. There is less drama, and my grades are improving because I learnt not to get into disagreements.
