Laney

Laney, 17, was referred to our one-to-one programme because she was disengaged from school. She was struggling with friendships, learning and had lost purpose in her life.

My Programme Lead really believed in me and having someone who believes in you just as much as she did really impacts someone’s life.

The programme supports children and young people at risk of exclusion through 1:1 sessions.

Colette, one of our Senior Programme Leads, began meeting with Laney weekly, to provide a safe space for her to talk through any worries or concerns she had.

Colette said, “In our first few sessions, Laney was often frustrated by her inability to express herself. Her mood would shift depending on what had happened at school, and she felt no one was truly listening to her. She struggled to trust people.”

Laney and Colette worked closely together to improve Laney’s self-esteem and confidence.

First, Colette focused on building a consistent routine with Laney so she would feel comfortable in their sessions.

“I made sure our sessions were at the same time and day each week. I created a calm, non-judgemental space where Laney could express herself at her own pace. She needed space to talk, to feel heard and to process her worries – so that’s what I gave her.”

I made sure I followed through with any goals or next steps that we had set in previous sessions, so Laney knew I was dedicated to her wellbeing and had her best interests at heart. I was always open and honest in my approach and that is something Laney really appreciated,

Colette then worked with Laney on changing her mindset and the way she viewed herself. They focused on replacing negative self-talk with positive affirmations, which helped Laney become less critical of herself and more patient, boosting her overall confidence.

Laney also started to celebrate her achievements more. “It was important to show Laney that every small win mattered,” said Colette.

Throughout their time together, Colette’s positive reinforcements and encouragement gave Laney confidence in her abilities.

Laney said, “Colette really believed in me and having someone who believes in you just as much as Colette believed in me really impacts someone’s life.”

Laney had shown patience and a genuine desire to help others,

Over time, Laney began to feel calmer about the future and more at ease in her relationships. She understood that it was okay to make mistakes, and that she could always try again if things didn’t go as planned.

By the end of their sessions, Laney had expressed a desire to pursue a career in working with children. Colette saw an exciting opportunity for Laney to take part in our Teens and Toddlers programme, where she would become a mentor to a younger child in a local nursery.

Laney couldn’t wait to start Teens and Toddlers! She embraced the challenge and became a positive role model. Her caring nature wasn’t only appreciated by the toddlers she worked with, but it was also recognised by her teachers and peers at school too.

Laney’s newfound confidence allowed her to navigate friendships better and tackle school challenges in a more positive way.

Earlier this year at our end of year graduation ceremony, Laney won the ‘Rising Star of the Year’ award which further shows the incredible transformation she has had since working with Colette.

Colette said, “I commend Laney on her true grit, resilience and determination. She has so much potential, and we just had to remind her of how brilliant she truly is.”

The support Laney received from Colette was invaluable to her future. She helped Laney to build her confidence and find purpose in her life.

Laney even invited Colette to join her when she received her GCSE results. She said:

Colette has been such a big part of me being able to complete my GCSEs.

Power2 really made me understand things in a different way, made me believe in myself and taught me how to control my emotions.
